About the Program

From capturing the beauty of the Sandhill Cranes near Kearney to the tropics of the Amazon jungle, a new Nebraska Educational Television production, At Close Range: On Assignment with National Geographic follows Nebraska native Sartore in his pursuit of the perfect image.

Trail Joel from his home in Nebraska to the far corners of the earth to the halls of National Geographic and see how a story comes to life. While he muses about whether his is the best job in the world or the worst, he also considers working for National Geographic Magazine an honor. His images must tell a story for the legendary publication where photographs form the narrative for every article. He feels that the majority of Americans want to know that there are still some things that are wild and natural left. National Geographic brings that idea close to home.

In addition to following Joel into the field to make pictures, the program also shows him in consultation with his editors at National Geographic in Washington, DC, as thousands of frames are whittled down to the ten or twenty that will accompany a typical magazine story.
